| Baedeker Guides (their site is in German only) | Buy at Amazon.com | ||||||||||||||||||||||
|
This is
the oldest published tourist guidebook series in the world*.
Karl Baedeker, a German publisher, published the first Baedeker
guidebook in 1835. The books are lavishly illustrated with
color photos and mostly cover European countries with a smattering
of other countries outside Europe. Yes, they are published in
several languages including English. They are well-written and
include large fold-out maps with each book. *Karl Baedeker and John Murray, an English publisher who published his first tourist guide book a year after Baedeker did in 1836 are both credited with developing the concept. In the mid-20trh century, Eugene Fodor and Arthur Frommer popularized the travel guide as we know it today. Wikipedia has a good article on the history of travel guides. The Baedeker guides are a collectable and several sites have information on the older Baedeker guides: Site 1 Site 2. |
