Sir Ernest Shackleton and his party made the first crossing of the island in 1913 to reach the Whaling Station that was there after a heroic sea voyage in a small boat with a few men from Antarctica where the rest of his crew were marooned on Elephant Island. His entire crew was later rescued. |
