| Elephant Island, off the coast of Antarctica, was made famous by the Shackleton Expedition. This is where, in 1916, he left 22 of his men as he and 5 companions made a daring and heroic voyage in a small boat 800 miles to South Georgia Island to seek help. They made it and all his men were rescued. Here is information on Shackleton's stay on the island. A few Antarctic tour companies offer voyages that include stops at this island, weather permitting. | ||

| We love the Lonely Planet web site. They offer practical, down-to-earth, travel advice just like their wonderful travel guides and phrasebooks. They also have links to other sites with information about a place. Clicking "Go To Place" will take you to their page for Antarctica. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
