A
diplomatic mission
is a group of people from one country (called a
"state") or from an international organization
(such as the United Nations) that is present in
another country to represent their country's or
organization's interests. A permanent diplomatic
mission is usually referred to as an
embassy, and
the person in charge is called the
ambassador.
A diplomatic mission between the United
Kingdom's Commonwealth countries is known as a
High Commission
and the head of the mission is called a
High Commissioner.
All missions to the
United Nations
are known as Permanent
Missions and the head of such a
mission is typically both a
Permanent
Representative and an
ambassador.
Embassies are typically located in the capital
city.
A
Consulate or
Consulate-General is
a representative of the Embassy
in locales outside of the
capital city and it focuses on
assisting their citizens and
businesses in the area in which
they are located.
