| Places:
Nigeria,
Burkina Faso,
Cameroon,
Gambia,
Guinea,
Guinea-Bissau,
Mali,
Mauritania,
Niger and
Senegal. Alternate Names: Fula, Fulbe, Fellata, Fulfulde, Peul, Poular, Haalpulaar’en, Toucouleur and many dialects. The Adamawa dialect is one of the most well known. Notes: Fulani is the language of the Fulani people, or as they are also called, the Fula people, an ethic group that number about 15 million scattered throughout 17 countries of western Africa. Although "Fulfulde " is the linguistically correct name for the language, in English-speaking countries, it is commonly referred to as the Fulani or Fula language. Those are the names under which you are most likely to find products to learn the language. There are, of course, many dialects with different names. About 8 million, roughly half of the 15 million speakers of Fulfulde, live in northern Nigeria. There are also sizable numbers in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Senegal, with much fewer numbers in other countries of the region. If you are really interested in the ethnology of this language, here is a detailed article on the language. |
